I was editing the wrong book
Check which one you are in: the Book Title and the date range at the top of the editor identify it. To switch, go to My Library of Saved Books and open the one you meant. Any changes you made to the wrong book can be undone by hand — set its dates back and re-tick what you removed — and nothing on your account was touched.
